Meet Your Newest Employee: The Autonomous Drone That Never Sleeps
From a 2014 M.Sc. thesis to a patented reality. Discover how Svarmi’s new autonomous drone service acts as a 24/7 employee for your site - handling everything from licensing to precision mapping without any manual intervention.

At Svarmi, we’ve always believed that the future of industry wouldn't just be flown by pilots - it would be managed by systems. Today, that vision is officially a reality. We are thrilled to introduce our fully autonomous "Drone-in-a-Box" service, a solution we like to think of as your company’s newest, most tireless employee.

Vision a Decade in the Making
This isn't a "new" idea for us. The seeds of this service were planted back in 2014 at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. What started as the M.Sc. thesis in Mechanical Engineering for our founder and co-CEO, Tryggvi Stefánsson - designing a specialized docking mechanism to automate drone operations - eventually led to a patented technology that remains a cornerstone of our expertise today.
Our roots are in Iceland, where we founded the company in 2013. The island's notoriously difficult weather and rugged terrain served as the ultimate testing ground. In our early years, we designed and built our own drones from scratch to survive these conditions, giving us an unparalleled understanding of what these machines must endure to deliver reliable data in any environment.
The Pivot: Unlocking Data for Everyone
As the drone industry matured, hardware reached a level of reliability that allowed us to make a strategic shift. We realized we no longer needed to build the hardware ourselves to lead the market. Instead, we decided to focus our energy where we could provide the most value: unlocking the true potential of drone data for a much broader audience.
Our mission is to bridge the gap between complex technology and practical application. We want to put high-precision aerial intelligence into the hands of more than just geospatial experts. By focusing on our DATACT platform, we are making this data accessible and useful for the scientists, engineers, and environmental experts who are building infrastructure and monitoring our natural world every day.

Why Hire an Autonomous Drone?
If you are an expert in construction, energy, or infrastructure, you already know the value of high-quality mapping. But you also know the headaches of managing a drone program. That’s where our "employee" comes in.
1. Zero Training, Zero Bureaucracy
Operating drones today requires navigating a minefield of strict regulations, particularly for BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operations. These missions are critical for large-scale sites but are incredibly complex to license under European law. When you "hire" our service, we act as your regulatory shield. We handle all SORA/LUC licensing and legalities with the relevant authorities. You get the data; we handle the bureaucracy.
2. The Power of DATACT
While the drone is the worker, DATACT is the office. You don’t need to be a drone expert to benefit from this technology. All mission data, from high-resolution orthophotos to advanced 3D models, is automatically uploaded to DATACT. Your entire team can view, measure, and manage site progress from their desks, anywhere in the world.

3. Versatility Across Every Sector
This "employee" is multi-skilled: monitoring construction progress, inspecting subsurface utilities before they are buried, or acting as a first responder for security and thermal anomalies. It flies on schedule or on-demand, providing centimeter-level accuracy every single time.
Setting the Standard for Professional Operations
As we move into this next chapter, we remain committed to elevating industry standards. We are proud to announce that in Q3 of this year, Svarmi will be the first in Iceland to offer STS (Standard Scenario) training. We aren't just providing a service; we are building the professional ecosystem that will define the future of sustainable infrastructure and environmental monitoring.
Curious how this "new employee" fits into your team? contact us and we’ll show you how to put high-precision intelligence to work for your project.
